Shillong: The Ministry of Education officially launched the search for a new vice-chancellor at North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong on Wednesday. This move follows an extended period of instability and ongoing protests on campus regarding the institution's management.

Interested individuals may submit online applications until June 18. The university requires candidates to be distinguished academics with at least ten years of experience as a professor or equivalent expertise in a research or administrative organization. The official notification emphasizes that the chosen leader must demonstrate high levels of integrity, moral character, and a deep commitment to the institution.

The successful applicant will earn a fixed monthly salary of 2.10 lakh rupees along with a special allowance and additional benefits. A designated committee will review candidates and recommend a final panel of names for the appointment.

This search comes as current Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla remains largely absent from campus. He has been on leave since November 2024, following vocal demands from students and teacher organizations for his removal. These groups have accused the current administration of significant governance failures and have repeatedly called on the central government to intervene in university affairs.
