Shillong: The Bharatiya Janata Party will select its nominee for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election once the Election Commission of India sets the date. Party leaders in Meghalaya have already passed a list of aspirants to the high command in New Delhi. MLA Alexander Laloo Hek confirmed the news on Friday.
The state unit wants its own candidate on the ballot. Local leaders vetted multiple applicants through the election committee. Hek noted the process is ongoing. "We have held several rounds of discussions, but no final decision has been taken," Hek said.
General secretary Wankitbok Pohshna claims the party no longer needs to sell its vision to voters under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He argued that winning a seat would link the state directly to federal power. A BJP MP could push pending demands and track development projects with more leverage in the capital. The party waits for the official schedule to act.
