Guwahati: Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati is getting a massive Rs 340 crore makeover. Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced the project on October 2 during the 72nd Wildlife Week kickoff. The state aims to transform the facility into a premier international wildlife destination.

Construction is moving fast. The project blends modern infrastructure with the zoo's existing natural terrain. "With several new additions, we are rebuilding the zoo and once the work is completed, I believe we will be able to transform it into a leading zoo, not only in India but also internationally," Baruah said.

Key features include a massive bird aviary, likely ranking among the largest globally. A new toy train will navigate the sprawling complex, easing travel for tourists. Officials studied parks in Bengaluru and Chennai to finalize the design. Expect visible progress on these facilities in three to four months. The full project will take longer.

The zoo hosted several events to mark Wildlife Week. The day featured Hasti Pujan, or Gaja Puja, and a forest department bike rally to Pobitora. Minister Baruah also paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti before his inspection. Wildlife Week events run until October 6, ending with a final meeting at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.
