Assam Police Deny Gangster Ran Operations From Silchar Jail

Guwahati: Assam Police shut down claims that jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria used Silchar Central Jail to manage criminal operations or social media. Officials labeled the allegations as misleading and baseless. These rumors gained traction in July 2026 after a US government report mentioned Bhagwanpuria during a crackdown on criminals, but police noted the document never linked him to any activity inside the Assam facility.

Authorities took immediate action. On July 11, the Cachar district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police raided the prison alongside top jail staff. The search turned up zero contraband or digital devices. Guards face tighter protocols now. Police ordered staff to ramp up surveillance to stop any potential unauthorized contact from the cell blocks. Surprise inspections remain the standard.

Investigators also tapped cyber forensics to track three Instagram profiles tied to the gangster. Two accounts trace back to 2017, while a third appeared in 2023 with zero activity. Police found no evidence of him using these platforms while locked up. The department hit back at the accusations, calling them "mischievous" in the absence of supporting evidence.
