Guwahati: Cachar police arrested 29-year-old Kalparnab Gupta on September 28. He faces charges for allegedly sharing communally provocative content on social media. Gupta identifies himself as a research scholar at IIT-Bombay and leads the Barak Union for Civil Liberties.

A Bajrang Dal activist filed the complaint at Silchar police station. The activist claims Gupta spread defamatory material targeting the Bajrang Dal, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and the Hindu faith. The complaint alleges that Gupta linked members of the Bajrang Dal to extortion schemes and a recent gang-rape case in Cachar. He also stands accused of making "insulting remarks" about Lord Ram and mocking religious symbols like the sakha-sindoor.

Investigators say Gupta advocated for beef consumption to deliberately hurt religious sentiments. Officers booked him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for promoting enmity, public mischief, and defamation. They also invoked provisions from the Assam Cattle Preservation Act. Police are currently gathering digital evidence and questioning the suspect as the investigation continues.
