Guwahati: More than 10 people fell ill in the Malaysia Chariali area of Maatmora, Assam, after eating pork on Saturday night. The victims suffered from vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, and stomach pain. Everyone affected ate meat from the same pig, which they bought at Raghu Tiniali.
Families rushed many to Dhakuakhana Sub-Divisional Hospital for emergency care. Others are recovering at home. Narayan Panging, 48, Maneswar Mili, 55, Pinky Panging, 35, Joydeep Panging, 19, Devi Panging, 15, Rimpi Panging, 17, Uttam Doley, 30, and Markle Pegu, 50, are among those hospitalized.
One victim described the ordeal. "I enquired about the quality of the pork from the seller in the morning and he assured me it was the best, so I bought some and cooked its liver and intestine for lunch. But in the evening my family and I began to feel severe pain in my stomach, fever and nausea and frequent loose motion," the man said.
The area has a history of African Swine Fever. On May 30, 17 pigs died from the virus. This forced officials to ban all pork sales and transport on June 3. On June 6, 2026, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department issued a fresh advisory under E-File number 374465/1784418/2026/1. Villagers currently dismiss the fever as the cause of their sickness. Medical experts have not yet confirmed if the illness stems from contaminated meat or another source. Investigations continue.
