Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma marked both the International Day of the Girl Child and the first day of Navratri on Sunday, October 11, 2026. He pledged to boost support for the state's young women, calling them the future of Assam. He insists the government will provide education, safety, and better opportunities. "Our daughters are Assam’s future. We will always stand with them," Sarma wrote on X.

The message follows recent public anxiety regarding the safety of young women in the state, specifically highlighting the death of student Himashree Boro in Andhra Pradesh. Sarma continues to push state programs as a solution for stability. He linked the strength of Maa Shailaputri to the government's Orunodoi scheme, which sends direct payments to local women.

The scheme currently supports more than 37 lakh women in Assam. Each participant receives Rs 1,250 every month via direct bank transfers. The Chief Minister claims this money covers basic household needs like medicine, pulses, and vegetables. He believes putting cash directly into the hands of women creates a firm financial base for families. Sarma hopes this support ensures that no mother in the state worries about her family's next meal.
