Assam Assembly Names Rekibuddin Ahmed to Lead Public Accounts Committee

Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly officially formed its Public Accounts Committee for 2026. Assembly officials named Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed as the group's chairperson. They start work immediately. The committee exists to scrutinize government spending and hold state departments accountable for their financial decisions.

The panel includes a cross-party roster of legislators. Members serving alongside Ahmed are Hemen Das, Bhaskar Narayan Das, Rupak Sarma, Manab Deka, Pradip Sarkar, Khilonjiya Kumar Saikia, Sunil Kumar, Rishikesh Kumar, Anil Kumar Rashed Alam, and Prithviraj Rabha. They hold a heavy responsibility. The committee will examine reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General to track how tax dollars move.

According to the official notification, the committee acts as a primary check on the executive branch. The body checks if public funds match the original approvals granted by the legislature. Legislators hope this oversight strengthens accountability across the state. This group remains the main financial watchdog for Assam's assembly.
