Shillong: The Achik People’s State Forum (ASPF) wants the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills to clear illegal settlers from Mendipathar Bazaar. The group discovered a non-tribal individual building a structure right next to the Council’s Forest Department office. The builder failed to produce any land papers despite claims of holding pattas.
"We observed a building structure being constructed adjacent to the Council’s Forest Department office and discovered that a non-tribal individual is illegally occupying the land and proceeding with construction activities," said Raksim Marak, the ASPF chief organisation secretary. He criticized the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, the Bazaar Committee, and the District Administration for their lack of oversight.
The ASPF is now pushing for an official inquiry and immediate eviction. They want the existing structure dismantled to stop violations of local land regulations. Furthermore, the forum warned against benami transactions. They argue that any land deal shielding a non-tribal person behind a tribal name must be declared void to protect indigenous land rights.
