ASPF files FIR after cattle smuggling confrontation in North Garo Hills

Shillong: The Kharkutta unit of the A’chik State People’s Front filed an FIR on October 6 following an assault on one of their members in Chigrang village. The incident began on October 5 when the team traveled from Adokgre toward Mangsang Road to collect reports on the Jal Jeevan Mission.

They spotted two trucks, registration numbers AS 01 JC 9267 and AS 01 QC 5405, packed with cattle. The animals lacked food, water, and legal transport permits. ASPF members started filming the vehicles. Suddenly, 10 to 15 men blocking the road confronted the group. The attackers assaulted one ASPF member and held him against his will.

The organization submitted photo and video evidence to the police. “We suspect these trucks were part of a syndicate operating along the Adokgre–Mangsang–Rongjeng route with the assistance of local facilitators and were en route to neighbouring Bangladesh,” the ASPF stated. They believe the syndicate funnels cattle into Bangladesh through the state.

The FIR demands action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, and the Meghalaya Cattle Preservation Act of 2020. ASPF leaders want police to seize the trucks, check transit permits, and audit CCTV footage from the Adokgre outpost. They also requested immediate protection for their members and the safe release of the detained individual.
