Itanagar: Saji Natung flipped his way into the history books. The Arunachal Pradesh mountaineer performed a backflip at the top of Mount Yunam, a 6,111-metre peak in Himachal Pradesh. The India Book of Records confirmed the feat on July 16, labeling it the highest-altitude single backflip by an individual.
The achievement occurred during the Mount Yunam Expedition 2026. Natung, who hails from the East Kameng district, operated out of Bharatpur, Manali, between July 4 and July 11. He started his final climb at 6:30 am on July 10 and stood on the summit by 12:15 pm. His team also managed a tense rescue operation on July 9, pulling members from the summit camp to safety at base camp before heading to Manali.
Arunachal Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein praised the climber for the milestone. In a post on X, Mein wrote, "Congratulations to Shri Saji Natung on earning a place in the India Book of Records 2026 as the first Indian to perform a backflip atop Mount Yunam (6,111 metres) in Himachal Pradesh." Officials across Arunachal Pradesh now view the stunt as a major win for local adventure sports.
