Gangtok: The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) is set to host AquaEx Northeast, a premier two-day fisheries and aquaculture expo, in Sikkim on June 12 and 13, 2026. This tenth edition of the event aims to establish a central hub for fish farmers, technology providers, government agencies, and investors from across the Northeast region to engage in networking and knowledge sharing.

Rajnish Kumar, a Governing Board Member of the NFDB, stated that the initiative is designed to raise public awareness regarding the vital role of fisheries. He highlighted that while India does not suffer from a general food shortage, it faces a significant protein deficiency. Fish serves as an ideal solution due to its high-quality protein content and excellent amino acid profile.

The expo is structured around three core pillars. First, it facilitates direct interaction between farmers and industry representatives to address persistent challenges in the sector. Farmers frequently struggle with pre-harvest hurdles like sourcing quality seeds and feed, as well as post-harvest issues such as limited access to lucrative marketplaces. The event aims to connect producers with modern technologies and entrepreneurial opportunities to increase their profitability.

Second, the programme includes technical sessions and seminars featuring experts from ICAR, professional farmers, and banking specialists. These discussions will explore how modern systems can be practically implemented at the grassroots level to improve efficiency. Finally, the third focus area targets investment opportunities for underdeveloped sectors in the region, such as IoT-based fisheries systems, advanced aerators, and fish processing infrastructure.
