AMUCO Demands Economic Relief as Blockades Strangle Manipur

Imphal: The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation wants immediate financial help from the Centre and the Manipur state government. Business is dead. Recurring blockades and counter-blockades have choked the local economy since ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023.

AMUCO blamed the crisis on restricted highway movement and the presence of buffer zones. They labeled the tactics as "dangerous instruments of war" intended to target specific communities. These barriers do more than stop traffic: they fuel social division and ruin small-scale industries.

Traders and entrepreneurs are suffering heavy losses. AMUCO warned that retaliatory measures only deepen the divide. They urged the government to step in with economic packages, tax concessions, and relief efforts to revive local trade. They also want officials to stop banks from starting recovery proceedings against borrowers caught in the conflict. The organisation specifically requested that authorities seek financial aid from the Reserve Bank of India to protect the state’s fragile economic future.
