Shillong: Air India Express is putting Meghalaya’s Khneng embroidery on the map. The airline added the traditional craft to its Tales of India initiative to boost the profile of the Khasi community’s historic needlework. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma credited the move for helping the local art form reach audiences far outside its home base.
Khneng translates to border in the Khasi language. Artisans in Mustoh village, located in the East Khasi Hills, have kept this practice alive for nearly two centuries. They craft precise, rhythmic patterns inspired by local plants, animals, and geometric shapes. Sangma said the work shows off the skill and heritage of his people.
The Chief Minister took to X to celebrate the partnership. He noted the stitches serve as a narrative for the community. During his announcement, Sangma stated, "A beautiful piece of Meghalaya’s living tradition, now travelling far beyond its roots."
