Agartala: Agartala is rolling out 10 electric buses to modernize its public transit system. The city plans to have the vehicles running by the upcoming Puja festivities. This move marks the capital's first formal shift toward sustainable travel. The fleet is part of a broader push to lower pollution levels and provide cleaner commutes.

Urban Development Department Secretary Dr. Milind Ramteke confirmed the project falls under the Asian Development Bank funded Roads and Mobility program. Officials already opened the tendering process for the fleet and charging hardware. Interested parties must submit bids by August 21.

The initial phase features 10 nine-metre-long buses. They will run within a 10 to 12 kilometre radius of Agartala and surrounding areas. Dr. Ramteke noted the fleet size remains small to prevent service gaps. Dr. Ramteke explained, "the limited fleet size is a cautious start, designed to avoid disruption to existing transport services, with expansion planned depending on the success of the rollout."

The Agartala Municipal Corporation and Agartala Smart City Limited will manage daily operations. Planners admit the city currently lacks a formal transport network and charging sites. Success here could lead to a wider deployment, turning the city into a regional hub for green mobility.
