Guwahati: Activists from the All Assam Students Union (AASU) swarmed streets across the state on Thursday. They demanded immediate relief from skyrocketing prices on food and basic goods. Rallies hit multiple district headquarters as frustrations over inflation boiled over.
In Nagaon, protesters marched through the town on August 27. They targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing his government of ignoring the financial strain on average families. The Nagaon District Students Union led the charge, shouting anti-government slogans that filled the town.
Pathsala saw similar scenes at the local Traffic Point. Biddyut Das, president of the Bajali district unit, led the activists in their push for price controls. Meanwhile, the Tinsukia unit marched from their College Road office toward Thana Chariali. The air was tense.
AASU leadership set the stage for the statewide unrest on August 26. President Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan issued a joint statement highlighting the struggle of the average citizen. They argued that repeated price hikes have crippled household budgets. They warned that the union is not backing down. "The government had failed to effectively control the continuous rise in prices," the union stated.
Protesters maintained that the government remains indifferent to the suffering of the public. They demanded swift action to lower costs. Activists warned that demonstrations will continue until officials provide tangible relief to the people of Assam.
