West Khasi Hills Man Arrested After Viral Assault Video

Shillong: West Khasi Hills police arrested 23-year-old Fastdingson Wanniang on Monday for assaulting his estranged wife. The violent encounter took place on June 28 along the Nongstoin Bypass Road. Police acted quickly after footage of the attack surfaced online.

Officers identified Wanniang as a resident of Mawkadiang village. He and the 22-year-old victim had lived apart for over 18 months. The victim was with friends when Wanniang chased and beat her. Nongstoin Police caught the man with help from local Village Defence Party members. He now faces court charges.

Superintendent Herbert Kharkongor confirmed the arrest. "During the course of investigation, and based on source information, the accused involved in committing the act was identified," Kharkongor said. Authorities have referred the victim to a One Stop Centre for counseling and support.

Police warned the public to stop sharing the clip. Spreading the footage causes re-victimisation and carries legal risks under the BNS and IT Act. Kharkongor urged the public to report any information to the police directly. "Strict action will be taken against the offender as per the law," he added.
