Violent Clashes Erupt in Manipur as Protesters Demand Removal of Assam Rifles Outpost

Imphal: Clashes broke out in Manipur's Ukhrul district between residents and security forces, leaving at least 20 people injured. The violence erupted as villagers demonstrated against the establishment of a temporary Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven.

Community leaders stated that the facility was constructed within the jurisdiction of Shokvao village without obtaining the necessary approval from local authorities. Residents had repeatedly requested the removal of the site, but their appeals went unaddressed, leading to significant public resentment.

Protests occurred across two locations: New Heaven and Finch Corner near Shangshak village. Demonstrators, including women carrying torches, gathered to demand the immediate withdrawal of the security forces. The situation escalated when personnel attempted to disperse the crowds, with social media footage reportedly showing security forces using force against the participants.

During the confrontation, security personnel fired rounds and deployed tear gas to control the protesters. Village representatives have described the presence of the security forces as an "unauthorised" move that ignored their governance. Following the clashes, the 20 injured individuals were transported to Ukhrul District Hospital for medical attention.

The area remains under close observation by authorities as locals continue to call for the outpost to be vacated. The Assam Rifles had not issued an official statement regarding the incident by the time of reporting.
