Guwahati: The United People’s Party Liberal wants the Kokrajhar district administration to shut down a money-grabbing operation at the Srirampur Inter-State Check Gate. A syndicate is shaking down trucks carrying everything from eggs and fish to cement. This theft hits the wallet. The group claims these illegal tolls force prices up for everyday essentials across Bodoland, Assam, and the wider Northeast.
UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary fired off a formal memorandum to the Gossaigaon Sub-Divisional Officer on July 21. The party says these criminals hide behind a fake badge of authority to fleece drivers. The racket makes it expensive to move goods through the interstate corridor. Consumers pay the bill for this greed.
The memorandum states: "With reference to the subject cited above, we would like to draw your kind attention to the organised syndicate for collecting Illegal Tax from all Goods carrying vehicle passing through Srirampur Inter-State Check Gate. This has led to huge bearing on the skyrocketing prices rise of essential items in Bodoland, Assam and all Northeastern States."
The party expects the SDO to move fast and punish those involved. They sent copies of the demand to the Kokrajhar District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police. Everyone needs relief from these rising costs. Stricter oversight at the gate could bring prices back to earth.
