Guwahati: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan toured the flood-ravaged Dhemaji district in Assam on Wednesday alongside Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. They arrived to see the wreckage firsthand. A local river shifted its path, tearing through farms and homes in a violent display of nature.
The destruction looks bad. Chouhan laid out the grim reality following his inspection of the soaked landscape. "We witnessed the destruction here. A river changed its course and everything was destroyed. Several houses were washed away, crops suffered extensive damage and electric poles collapsed," he said.
The government plans to clear heavy silt and debris from fields so farmers can start planting again. Officials will finish an assessment before cutting checks for lost property. Both the federal and state governments promised to pay for house construction and other recovery costs. Authorities are already working to fix power lines and get life back to normal.
