Shillong: Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited the Golf Club in Shillong on Friday to participate in a tree plantation drive marking World Environment Day. The event formed part of a nationwide initiative organized by the BJP to promote environmental conservation efforts.
Nadda explained that the activities were conducted under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s One Tree One Mother campaign. Launched in 2024 and expanded in 2025, the program encourages citizens to plant saplings as a tribute to their mothers while fostering a deeper connection to nature. Nadda emphasized the emotional core of the initiative, stating, "A mother serves her children selflessly and unconditionally, just as nature sustains and nurtures human life."
The minister noted that lakhs of BJP workers across India were participating in similar plantation events to support the Prime Minister’s call for large-scale environmental action. Senior BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek joined Nadda at the Shillong site to plant trees.
Hek used the occasion to advocate for stronger environmental stewardship, warning that protecting forests, water sources, and biodiversity is essential to meeting modern ecological challenges. He called on the public to commit to sustained efforts to ensure a greener and more sustainable future for the next generation.
