UDP Seeks Continued Alliance Support for Shillong Lok Sabha Bypoll

Shillong: The United Democratic Party is holding out hope that its alliance partner, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party, will support its candidate in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh confirmed that the Regional Democratic Alliance between the two parties remains intact despite current uncertainty regarding the vote.

The UDP recently named senior advocate Vivan GK Kynta as its candidate for the race. While the HSPDP has yet to declare whether it will back Kynta or nominate its own candidate, the UDP remains eager to secure their cooperation. Lyngdoh noted that his party shares similar state objectives with the HSPDP and views them as a vital regional partner.

Lyngdoh stated that the UDP will respect the final decision made by the HSPDP leadership. He added that the door remains open for a formal agreement as both parties await a final determination in the coming days. The Regional Democratic Alliance has operated as a collaborative political force in Meghalaya for several years, even when the parties have occasionally pursued independent paths in previous elections.
