Guwahati: Two young girls drowned in an unfenced pond in Assam's Nagaon district yesterday. The tragedy hit Haldhibari village in Kachua. The victims were 5-year-old Ayesha Siddika and 6-year-old Somaya Akhtar.

The girls played near their home. They wandered too close to the water and fell in. Family members realized the children were missing and started a frantic search. They eventually found the bodies floating in the pond.

Kachua Police arrived at the scene to recover the remains. Officers sent the bodies to Nagaon for a post-mortem examination. Both victims attended the Lutumari Parijat Academy.

The local community is mourning the loss of the two students. Authorities are now warning parents to watch their kids near water as the rainy season brings higher risk. An official stated, "residents have been urged to remain especially vigilant and ensure children are supervised around water bodies to prevent similar tragedies."
