Guwahati: Ghungoor police took two men into custody at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. They allegedly demanded cash from a family for blood units. Taimun Nessa, 35, from Ramkrishnanagar, has been a patient in the maternity ward since July 25. She spent three days in the ICU.
Doctors told the family to organize blood donations. The patient's husband, Namr Uddin, claimed a man approached him near the bed. The suspect allegedly demanded Rs 5,500 to provide the blood. Hospital staff grew suspicious as the transaction neared completion. They stopped the deal and held the men for police.
The accused denied the extortion attempt. They claimed, "they had not demanded money for blood and had only sought a small amount for tea and refreshments." SMCH Superintendent Dr. Bikash Sanyal stated the hospital maintains a zero-tolerance policy against middlemen and theft rings. He warned patients to ignore touts and deal only with hospital officials. Police launched an investigation to verify the facts.
