Guwahati: A water tank structure collapsed at the under-construction Bilasipara Railway Station in Dhubri on May 26, leaving two workers dead and seven others seriously injured. The accident occurred while laborers were performing high-altitude work on the project. Witnesses reported that the bamboo scaffolding gave way, causing the heavy tank to fall onto the crew below.
The two victims, identified as Siddique Shaikh and Saiful Islam, died at the scene. Emergency responders and local residents transported the seven injured workers, including Bakkar Sheikh, Nazir Hussain, Abubakar Sheikh, Zahir Islam, Jabbar Sheikh, Enam Karim, and Nawab Ali, to the Bilasipara Model CHC Hospital for treatment.
The incident prompted protests from local residents and community groups who accused the project contractor of negligence. Critics claim the construction site lacked essential safety equipment and proper structural support. Police and an Executive Magistrate have since secured the scene to conduct an investigation, while the bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examinations. Organizations involved in the aftermath are now demanding a formal inquiry, accountability for the contractor, and compensation for all affected families.
