Shillong: Donald Trump ignited a political firestorm on Saturday. During a two-day trip to Ireland, the former president called for the unification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. He pushed the idea during a joint press conference in Dublin with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. He wants it done. Trump told reporters, "I don't want to cause any problems, but I will tell you, I'd love to see it unified." He added that the merger should happen sooner rather than later.
The comments triggered an immediate response from British leadership. Kemi Badenoch, who leads the Conservative Party, took to X to bash the remarks. She accused Trump of shooting from the hip. She compared the stance to his past comments about Canada or Greenland. Gavin Robinson, the head of the Democratic Unionist Party, stood his ground. He stated that the constitutional fate of Northern Ireland belongs to its own people, not officials in Washington or Dublin.
Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, also disagreed with the former president. He reaffirmed that Northern Ireland remains a proud part of the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously declared that any referendum on the issue is off the table. The 1998 Belfast Agreement serves as the legal bedrock here. It dictates that Northern Ireland stays in the UK until a majority of its citizens vote otherwise. Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin urged politicians to keep a calm perspective after the comments.
