Guwahati: Assam police detained three men in the Tinsukia district on May 29 for allegedly attempting to join the banned insurgent group ULFA-I. Authorities identified the suspects as 28-year-old Bijoy Moran, 34-year-old Antu Moran, and 22-year-old Newton Moran, all residents of the Pengeri area.

Police acted on intelligence reports and intercepted the trio while they were reportedly traveling to link up with the militant organization. Investigators believe the men were acting under the direction of an ULFA-I cadre identified as Japan Asom.

Beyond their alleged plans to join the insurgency, the suspects are accused of delivering extortion notes and collecting money from local residents. The three men remain in custody at the Lekhapani Police Station as officials investigate the full scale of their involvement in the extortion network and their connections to the banned outfit.
