Imphal: Three people were killed and seven houses were destroyed during an armed attack on Loibol Khullen village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Friday. The violence broke out around 4 am in the Saitu-Gamphazol subdivision, triggering a gun battle that forced residents to flee into nearby forests for safety.

Authorities identified the deceased as Letkhongam Haokip, his wife Tinmary Haokip, and Jangminlal Haokip. While initial reports from the area suggested fewer homes were impacted, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) reported that seven houses were set ablaze during the assault.

The KIM, an apex body representing Kuki tribes, condemned the attack and demanded a swift investigation into the killings. In a formal statement, the organization stated, “KIM unequivocally denounces this barbaric act of violence against unarmed civilians. The deliberate killing of innocent persons, and the destruction of homes and livelihoods constitute a serious violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights.”

Security forces have not yet released an official statement regarding the specific groups involved in the exchange of fire. The incident has raised further concerns regarding the security situation in the region as the area continues to face prolonged ethnic tensions.
