Thoubal Market Vendors Protest Opening of New Vishal Mega Mart

Imphal: Women vendors from Thoubal Keithel have ramped up their opposition to the planned opening of a Vishal Mega Mart at Zero Kilometer in Thoubal. The protesters are demanding that the Thoubal Municipal Council formally cancel the licence issued to the retail chain, arguing that a large corporate outlet threatens the livelihoods of local traders.

The demonstration caused significant traffic delays as vendors blocked one side of the National Highway passing through the market area. Following the blockade, the group marched to the offices of the Thoubal Municipal Council to stage a sit-in at the entrance gate. Demonstrators voiced frustration over the council's response, claiming officials have failed to engage in meaningful dialogue or provide clear answers regarding the store's permit.

Vendor Irom Subasini stated that the group is prepared to escalate their actions if the authorities do not take immediate steps to address their concerns. The traders maintain that the presence of a major retail chain will damage the traditional marketplace that sustains their families. They have warned that further, stronger forms of protest will follow if their demands remain unaddressed.
