Tensions Flare at Saparmeina During Search for Hostages

Imphal: A group of Kuki-Zo women confronted a CRPF convoy in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on May 21 during a period of high anxiety regarding community members reportedly held hostage in the nearby Senapati district. The women, many of whom were relatives of the missing, gathered near Saparmeina to appeal to passing security forces for assistance in securing the safe return of their loved ones.

Community leaders stated that the gathering was an emotional response to a crisis rather than a calculated attempt to block the road. They explained that the women hoped to draw attention to their situation, but the security convoy perceived the crowd as an obstruction. This mismatch in intent led to a tense standoff at the site.

Local leaders intervened shortly after to defuse the situation, allowing the convoy to continue its journey without further conflict. Following the event, community representatives asked for public restraint and careful reporting on sensitive matters. They also requested that authorities maintain vigilance in volatile regions and encouraged mutual understanding among all affected groups. Security agencies have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
