Guwahati: Tensions flared in Assam's Nalbari district following a violent incident on May 30 that left one young man dead and a teenage girl critically wounded. The victims, 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka, were traveling on a scooter near Gangapur when they were allegedly attacked by two men identified as Roz Ali and Ashik Ali.
Barman, who served as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union, died from his injuries at the scene. Deka was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital where she remains in the intensive care unit. Local reports state the pair were returning to their homes from Nalbari town when they were discovered roadside with severe injuries.
The incident has triggered widespread community concern and prompted some groups to allege the attack was motivated by love jihad, though authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the assault. Residents and local organizations are calling for a swift, impartial investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and provide justice for the victims' families.
