Shillong: Authorities in Karnataka have taken ten individuals into custody following the gang-rape of a 41-year-old woman in Davanagere district. The suspects, who include a minor, were arrested after the victim filed a formal complaint at the Basavapatna police station early Tuesday morning.
The incident began on June 3 when the victim, who was traveling to her parental home following a domestic dispute, accepted a ride from a group of men on a motorcycle. Police state the men provided the woman with a cold drink laced with alcohol. Once she lost consciousness, the group transported her to a remote location to carry out the assault.
The attackers allegedly recorded the crime on a mobile phone and threatened to post the footage on social media if the victim reported the incident. The woman initially stayed silent due to these threats, but she approached the police after learning that the video had surfaced online. A case was registered by 4:30 am, and officers apprehended all suspects shortly thereafter.
Police said the accused are Ishtree Nagaraj, Arjuna, Basavantha, Kunduru Maruti, Hegga Maruti, Manu, Jogi Sunil, Pradeep, Madhu, and one minor. Following medical examinations at the Channagiri taluk hospital, all ten suspects were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Officials confirmed that the investigation remains active as they piece together the details of the crime.
