Guwahati: A 17-year-old girl died Friday morning after falling into the Gadadhar River in Dhubri, Assam. Aksara Gowala, a student in the first year of Higher Secondary at Sishupathsala Higher Secondary School, slipped into the water near Mela Ghat around 10 am.

She lived with her father, local businessman Ramchandra Gowala, in Ward No. 1 right next to the river. Handcart pullers working for her father jumped into the current to find her before the State Disaster Response Force arrived to assist the search.

Local residents and rescue crews hunted for the girl for over an hour. They recovered her body from the river at 11.20 am. Authorities have started the necessary formalities following the death, which has left the community in mourning.
