Guwahati: A 17-year-old boy died Saturday after the Gangadhar river pulled him under. Jahidur Islam was bathing with friends near the India-Bangladesh border in Dhubri when the current dragged him away. He disappeared around noon. The site sits only 200 metres from the international line.
Locals called for help right away. Villagers grew angry as the State Disaster Response Force took hours to reach the scene. One resident complained about the slow reaction, stating, "We informed the authorities immediately, but it took the rescue team nearly four hours to arrive. In drowning cases, every minute counts."
The Border Security Force and the SDRF eventually joined forces to comb the water. The Border Security Force monitored the search to keep the operation on the Indian side of the border. Rescuers found the body four hours later. The boy was trapped against barbed-wire fencing near the border pillars. Police sent the remains for a post-mortem examination to wrap up the investigation.
