Tangkhul Villages Demand Judicial Probe After Nighttime Gunfire Attack

Imphal: Residents of Leingangching, Litan, and Sharkaphung villages are demanding an urgent judicial investigation following an intense attack involving automatic weapons on the night of May 26. The firing began around 10:22 pm and reportedly originated from the direction of the nearby Mongkot Chepu Kuki village.

Community representatives described the assault as an unprovoked violation of civilian safety that left women, children, and elderly residents in terror. According to the villagers, the incident disrupted local peace and severely compromised communal stability. Allegations have also emerged that security forces fired live rounds toward Naga residents as they attempted to defend their homes, rather than addressing the origin of the gunfire.

In response to the violence, the affected communities are calling for a time-bound, independent probe into the events. They have requested the immediate deployment of neutral peacekeeping forces, citing a lack of confidence in current security arrangements. The villages are urging the Government of Manipur, the Union Government, and the National Human Rights Commission to intervene and hold those responsible for the firing accountable under the law.
