Shillong: India’s top-ranked tennis players Sumit Nagal and Sahaja Yamalapalli will lead the nation’s tennis contingent at the 20th Asian Games in Japan. The All India Tennis Association selected the squad on Monday, choosing a roster that balances veteran campaigners with emerging talent to compete in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4.
The men’s side features Sumit Nagal alongside Manas Dhamne and Dhakshineswar Suresh for singles play. They will be supported by doubles specialists Yuki Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji, and Anirudh Chandrasekar. The AITA also named Karan Singh, Rithvik Bollipalli, and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha as reserves for the men's team.
For the women's events, Sahaja Yamalapalli joins Vaishnavi Adkar and Vaidehee Choudhari to handle singles duties. The team is rounded out by doubles players Rutuja Bhosale, Prarthana Thombare, and Ankita Raina, while Zeel Desai and Shruti Ahlawat will serve as reserves.
AITA secretary general Sunder Iyer confirmed that the selection committee reviewed recent performances on the professional circuit to finalize the group. "The Selection Committee has carefully evaluated performances across the professional circuit and selected a team that combines experience, current form and future potential," Iyer stated.
