Guwahati: A brutal storm tore through Jorhat on the night of August 24, leaving a trail of dead and dying wildlife. High winds hammered DCB Road, a site known for its large population of snail-eating birds, locally called Samuk Bhonga. The count stands at 62 dead and 68 injured.
Forest officials moved fast. They gathered the survivors and carcasses, transporting them to the Jorhat Regional Forest Office for immediate triage. The birds remain under official guard while medical logistics are sorted out.
The department plans to ship the wounded to Panbari in Kaziranga to receive specialized veterinary care. A local forest ranger confirmed the response plan during the cleanup. "Necessary steps are being taken to treat the injured birds and manage the situation," the ranger stated.
