Guwahati: Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia donated the corneas of her late mother, Bijoya Chetia, following her death on Tuesday, May 26. The 70-year-old had been suffering from a long-term illness before passing away at the official residence of the police officer.
The donation took place after a team from the Jeeuti Eye Bank arrived at the residence to facilitate the procedure. While the medical team worked, the SSP remained focused on her duties, having been at her office for a press conference at the time of her mother's passing.
The family residence in Sivasagar currently holds the mortal remains of the deceased, who was a native of Betbari Bokabil. This personal loss comes just one day after the SSP led a high-profile police operation against extortionists in the district. During that mission, officers engaged in a shootout at Bogidol Mola village, resulting in injuries to two suspects linked to the ULFA. The group had been accused of threatening local business owners, including a demand for 8 lakh rupees from a businessman named Lachit Gogoi.
