Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman toured the Wahiajer Football Stadium in Meghalaya this week. She met with local students and athletes at the West Jaintia Hills facility. The site cost over 65 crore rupees to build. It relied on cash from the Centre’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme. This program grants states 50-year interest-free loans for big projects.

The complex covers 16 acres. It aims to boost regional sports gear. The football pitch sits inside an athletics track. Both meet strict FIFA and World Athletics standards. Workers installed a synthetic turf and an eight-lane 400-metre track. It also hosts pits for long jump, triple jump, and pole vault events. Competitors can practice javelin, shot put, and discus throw as well.

The stadium seats 4,300 fans. Total capacity exceeds 6,000 people. Officials said the facility is expected to support sports training and competitions in the region and provide improved infrastructure for aspiring athletes. This site serves as a major upgrade for local talent.
