Shillong: Work on the Rs 151-crore Shillong Ropeway is moving again. Crews are pushing to finish the transit link by late 2026. The project faced years of gridlock tied to court battles and environmental red tape.

South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai toured the Lawsohtun to Shillong Peak site this past Saturday. He checked the progress with agency officials. The line aims to cut traffic on the Upper Shillong road and ferry tourists to the peak more efficiently.

Ecological rules govern the build. Developers must plant 10 trees for every one they cut down to satisfy the compensatory afforestation plan. This requirement cleared a major hurdle for work in the sensitive Shillong range.

The project finally has momentum. Officials expect the ropeway to improve visitor movement while providing a needed alternative transport option for the Khasi Hills.
