Shillong: Shillong is spending Rs 25 crore to overhaul Ward’s Lake, known locally as Nan Polok. The state government split the work into two tracks: cleaning the water and beautifying the grounds. Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar D confirmed the Urban Affairs Department already started the cleanup phase. They are de-silting the lake and installing a Lamella Clarifier. Nano bubble technology will boost oxygen levels to revive the ecosystem. Officials expect clear water in three months.
The Tourism Department handles the beautification side. Plans include upgraded walkways, new signage, decorative lights, and fresh street furniture. Workers are currently building a new entry gate. This structure upset some locals. Many residents argue the current setup of large iron panels and hessian sheets blocks views, saying it serves to "diminish its historic appearance."
Crews will soon reconstruct the Japanese-style central wooden bridge. The Forest Department cleared the plans, promising the new bridge will match the original aesthetic. The government finished the Detailed Project Report to align restoration with heritage conservation. Public complaints sparked this move. Locals claim the site turned into a venue for constant fairs and government events, destroying the once-tranquil atmosphere. They blame the shift from Forest Department management to the Tourism Department for this commercial creep. Citizens hope this project brings back the quiet charm of their city landmark.
