Shillong Hoteliers Urge Police to Address Rising Drug Abuse in City Centers

Shillong: The Federation of Shillong Hotels has formally requested intervention from the Superintendent of Police to combat a growing number of drug users occupying public areas. The group highlighted Police Bazar and its surrounding vicinities as the primary locations experiencing a surge in illicit activity.

Local business owners report that the presence of these individuals has led to frequent incidents of robbery, theft, and harassment. The Federation expressed specific concern regarding the safety of visitors, noting that tourists are increasingly becoming targets for these crimes.

The organization warned that the current situation poses a serious threat to the tourism industry in Meghalaya. They stated that failing to control the menace could cause long-term damage to the region's reputation as a secure travel destination. If authorities do not act immediately to clear the streets, the group fears the ongoing influx of visitors could decline.
