Shillong: Shillong hosted the 24th Swadesh Swabhiman youth lecture series this Saturday. The event took place at Deba Kumar Das Memorial Hall. This marked the first time the city held the program. The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students Association organized the talks alongside Guwahati's Asam Kotha Group to mark their golden jubilee.
Dr. Kuladhar Saikia laid out the vision for the series: to build a platform where students and scholars debate the history and social issues of Assam. Researchers tackled topics ranging from cross-border trade to the legacy of Srimanta Sankardev and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Other speakers looked at digital literacy and linguistic ties.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students Union went into mourning. The group lowered flags to half-mast and held prayers for their assistant organising secretary, Melajied Khongbuh. He died while actively serving the community. The union released a statement calling his death an irreparable loss. They noted that "Khongbuh’s spirit will continue to guide the organisation and the community in their collective efforts."
The weekend also saw the Shillong Sakha of the Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samity hit a milestone. They celebrated their second anniversary at Assam House. Writers and academics gathered to discuss how women's literature acts as a bridge between different cultures. Attendees included Dr. Esther Syiem and Dr. Jyotirmoy Prodhani, who led discussions on the value of collective literary work.
