Shillong: The East Khasi Hills Police have implemented traffic regulations across Shillong for June 15 and 16 to support the upcoming North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026. The event will host various union ministers and VVIPs at the LARITI International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture and the SRGT parking lot in Polo.
Authorities expect significant convoy movement along the route connecting Umsawli, Mawkasiang, NEIGRIHMS, and Polo. Commuters are advised to utilize alternate paths through Mawpat, Golf Links, or Langkyrding and Pynthorumkhrah to bypass expected congestion. On June 15, the Lumjingshai junction will enforce a no entry order, redirecting vehicles toward the Lawmali and Polo areas.
These measures have drawn criticism from local residents and advocacy groups who argue that frequent corridor closures cause unnecessary hardship for businesses and the general public. Critics note that these restrictions follow a pattern seen during previous high-profile visits, which sparked similar complaints regarding a lack of prior consultation.
Healthcare access remains a primary concern, as the restricted routes pass near major facilities including the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences and the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. Patient advocates and staff warn that the diversions could hinder emergency ambulance services and delay essential medical appointments. In a statement regarding the changes, the Office of the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police said, "The police have requested public cooperation and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by these temporary arrangements."
