Imphal: Senapati Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S urged local farmers to embrace natural farming on Wednesday, September 2. He spoke at the District Kisan Mela/Agriculture Fair 2026-27, held at the DRDA Hall in Senapati. The event, hosted by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency and the District Administration, aims to lower input costs and boost soil health.
Natural farming works. Kumar noted that villages he visited already harvest two to three types of crops successfully. He challenged farmers to use the fair to connect with agriculture officials, learn about current government schemes, and access subsidies.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Adahrii Maheo joined the event as a guest of honour. He reported that over 50 per cent of the district population relies on farming. Maheo said: "Senapati has rich biodiversity, traditional knowledge and significant agricultural potential that can be harnessed through sustainable farming practices suited to the local terrain."
Farmers face real hurdles in the hilly district. Unpredictable weather, rough terrain, and transportation bottlenecks remain constant threats. Despite these, farmers from various subdivisions displayed their work across 14 stalls.
District Agricultural Officer L S Lavei James gave the keynote address, while Village Extension Worker David Longpani Tao detailed current government projects. The event drew a wide crowd, including Divisional Forest Officer Shanngam S and Sub-Divisional Officers from Paomata, Purul, Tadubi, and Willong. Officials wrapped up the day by inspecting stalls and awarding prizes to outstanding contributors.
