Imphal: Security forces fired tear gas shells at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal on Wednesday evening to disperse a large crowd gathered near the hospital mortuary. Tensions rose throughout the day after news emerged that six bodies had been recovered. Many in the area believed the deceased were individuals who had been held hostage.
Crowds began arriving at the medical complex around 4:30 pm to await the arrival of the remains. As the group grew in size, protesters expressed anger and frustration regarding the government response to the case. Officials stated the atmosphere became volatile as emotions ran high among the assembly.
To restore order and prevent further escalation, personnel deployed to the area used tear gas to clear the premises. Authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control shortly after the intervention. While there were no immediate reports of serious injuries, officials maintained a heavy security presence at the site. A source familiar with the situation described the event as a volatile escalation, noting that "security personnel deployed in the area to intervene" to prevent further unrest.
