Itanagar: Search teams found the body of 35-year-old teacher Nirmala Gupta on Wednesday. She was a teacher at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya in Yazali. Her death follows a flash flood and debris flow in the NEEPCO Colony of Keyi Panyor district. Four people remain missing, including Elesh Marak, Balari Marak, Tao Anjina, and Sourav Kumar.
Heavy monsoon rains triggered the disaster in the Panyor River catchment. The water destroyed houses and forced families from their homes. Seventeen people suffered injuries during the event. Three of those victims are in critical condition. Rescuers had to manually carry patients across damaged road sections near Pitapool to reach ambulances.
Multi-agency teams from the NDRF, SDRF, police, and fire services are combing the area and downstream locations. Rescuers successfully pulled Bishu Sinha from the Yazali reservoir and saved a Geological Survey of India scientist from a blocked highway. Officials urged the public to stay calm and follow local guidance, stating, "Citizens have also been urged not to panic and refrain from panic buying of essential commodities, including fuel, food items and LPG."
Landslides have severed transit across six western districts, including Upper Subansiri and Kamle. The Kimin route and the Itanagar-Hoj-Yazali National Highway face significant blockages. The Border Roads Organisation and Highway Department are working to clear debris from the Hoj bridge and other junctions. Officials expect to restore basic road connectivity by Thursday.
