RIMS Imphal Performs First Bentall Cardiac Surgery in Manipur

Imphal: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal successfully performed its first Bentall procedure on June 18. This complex open-heart surgery addressed severe aortic valve regurgitation and dangerous swelling of the aortic root. The patient is doing fine. Recovery is well underway.

A specialized team handled the operation. Prof. Thokchom Chito led the surgery, while Prof. L. Pradipkumar managed the anesthesia. The staff worked under the guidance of Prof. Shyamkumar Thingnam, formerly of PGI Chandigarh. They replaced the patient's aortic valve, aortic root, and ascending aorta.

The hospital did not stop there. RIMS also completed its first Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting surgery that same week. The department is busy. They are adding more services like congenital heart repairs and valve replacements to their roster.

RIMS Director praised the entire team for the win. He noted, "The achievement reflects the institute's growing capability to provide specialised cardiac treatment within the state, reducing the need for patients to seek such care outside Manipur."
