Shillong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented GI-tagged pineapples from Meghalaya to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a recent visit. Officials confirmed the exchange on May 21, noting the gift serves as a symbol of India's agricultural diversity and the unique produce of the Northeast.

Cultivated in the hilly terrains of Meghalaya, these pineapples are recognized globally for their distinct aroma, high sugar content, and low acidity. Beyond their flavor, the fruits are valued for their nutritional profile, which includes Vitamin C, antioxidants, and bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion and reduces inflammation.

The decision to feature the fruit on an international diplomatic stage aims to celebrate the state's farming community. This gesture aligns with a broader national initiative to promote indigenous and GI-tagged products from the Northeast to a global audience.
