Guwahati: Dispur police took activist Pranab Doley into custody on Sunday, July 12. He was leading a fight against luxury hotels near Kaziranga National Park. Officers hauled him to the Dispur Police Station for questioning.
Video footage caught Doley shouting as police moved him. "We can't even be the voice of the people. What kind of democracy is this? I was arrested without any papers and brought here. What kind of democracy is this?" he asked.
The case is now handled by Bokakhat police. Officials hit Doley with a long list of charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He faces counts including sections 61, 191, 190, 329, 324, 221, 132, 121, 351, 74, 326, and 62.
Doley comes from the indigenous Mising community. He holds a degree from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and leads several advocacy groups. He argues the hotel projects threaten the environment and ignore local rights.
